Join REI as we host this special lecture on the Endangered Canyons of Utah, presented by author and professional Outdoor Photographer, Harvey Halpern.

On the Colorado Plateau lie some of the most spectacular, remote and unique lands on the planet. Unfortunately their beauty has not protected them from the ravages of development. Dams, unnecessary roads, oil and gas drilling, mining, rampant O.R.V. use, and overgrazing are just some of the threats facing these public lands.

This audio-visual presentation, Endangered Canyons of Utah, details the spectacular landscapes at risk in Utah . Though the show includes all five National Parks in Utah, it concentrates on those lands outside the parks that are administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This presentation represents the culmination of 30 years of exploring the remote corners of Canyon Country. Some of the areas visited include: The Escalante river drainage, The San Rafael Swell, The canyons of the Dirty Devil, Nokai Dome, Dark Canyon, Hackberry-Paria, Grand Gulch White Canyon and its tributaries and Mancos Mesa. See photos of the longest raft trip ever done on the Dirty Devil River and first descents of Gravel Canyon and unnamed canyons on the San Rafael Swell and in the Escalante basin.

Harvey Halpern has over 30 years of experience exploring, photographing and documenting the landscapes of Utah. He has personally penned names for several canyons (Hydra, Shofar, Ichabod and Beryl) and has even had a technical canyon named for him, Hard Day Harvey, in which he was among the first descent party.

Join author and photographer Harvey Halpern for a question and answer session immediately following his presentation.
