About Our Presenters
William Powers is the author of the New York Times best-seller, Hamlet’s BlackBerry: A Practical Philosophy for Building a Good Life in the Digital Age. A former staff writer forThe Washington Post, he has written about media, technology and other subjects for a wide variety of publications includingThe Atlantic, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times andThe Guardian. He is a two-time winner of the National Press Club’s Rowse Award for best American media commentary, and appears frequently on television and radio. The bookgrew out of research he did as a fellow at Harvard University’s Shorenstein Center. He lives on Cape Cod with his wife, author Martha Sherrill, and their son.
Dr. Phil Budden currently serves as HM British Consul General in Boston, charged with strengthening relationships across New England's vast innovation ecosystem. The British Consulate was profiled on the front page of The Boston Globe in 2009 for its presence amid the ‘hub of innovation’ in Cambridge, MA., and its status as a ‘leading-edge outpost,’ with its focus on science, technology, trade, and investment. The Consul received his D. Phil in contemporary history and international political economy from Oxford University (Lincoln College), an MA in American history and government from Cornell University, and his BA/MA in British and European history from Oxford University. He married his wife Deborah on Cape Cod in 1992. They escape there whenever they can.
William A. Ghormley (moderator) is part of the “founding team” at Xconomy and serves as its Senior Vice President of Business Development. Xconomy’s goal is to become the authoritative voice on the exponential economy, the realm of business and innovation characterized by exponential technological growth and responsible for an increasing share of productivity and overall economic growth. Through a unique global network of localized blogs, events, conferences, and other initiatives, Xconomy provides business and technology leaders with close-to-the-scene information about the local personalities, companies, and technological trends that best exemplify today’s high-tech economy. Bill is involved with a number of non-profits that include The Congregational Library and American Congregational Association, Family Service of Greater Boston, The Massachusetts 9-11 Fund, The Old South Church of Boston, and is now a new member of the Board at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. Bill studied at Stanford University, Boston College, and Dartmouth’s Tuck School. He is married to Ann, and lives in Boston's Back Bay. They have two children, Elizabeth and David.
