The Roots of Jewish Identity in the Torah
Brown Bag Lunch – Kosher Style*
Wednesday, March 16, 2011, 12 noon to 1 pm
Vilna Shul, 18 Phillips Street, Boston MA.

Join us for a conversation with Daniel E. Levenson, founder and publisher of the New Vilna Review, on The Roots of Jewish Identity in the Torah. Together we will take a close look at the evolution of the idea of “Israel,” and the giving of the Torah – what does it mean to be a “nation of priests”? What kind of responsibilities do we have to each other as part of a larger community? What does it mean to be part of a community today? How has our sense of Jewish identity changed over time?

This is a part one of a series of conversations to be held at the Vilna Shul, Boston’s Center for Jewish Culture. Together we will ask What does it mean to be Jewish in a modern world? How do we find a place for ancient traditions in our modern lives?

Daniel E. Levenson is a writer, teacher and publisher of the New Vilna Review, a publication dedicated to creating open, accessible and vibrant dialogue within the Jewish community dedicated to exploring questions of modern Jewish identity from an individual and communal perspective. Mr. Levenson received his BA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in anthropology and a Master of Liberal Arts from the Harvard University Extension School. He is an adjunct professor in the English department at Mt. Ida College, teaching courses on writing, public speaking and literature.

The conversation is free but donations are appreciated.
