Session 2: The Emancipation of the Jews of Europe - a discussion of what the 'Emancipation of the Jews' involved, and the impact it had on individual and collective Jewish identity. Some of the questions we will explore will include: What can the events of the emancipation tell us about how Jews were thought of (both by themselves and by others) in the period before they were given rights in Europe? How did gaining such rights influence Jewish identity in western Europe? In what ways can we discern the influence of these events within our own lives, some 200 years later?
This is a brown bag lunch event. Please respect basic kosher laws (no pork, shellfish, or mixed meat and dairy). Registration is appreciated - please email steven@vilnashul.org - but walk-ins are welcome.
