Dr Weinstock-Savoy is a licensed psychologist and parent educator with over twenty years of experience consulting with parents and educators. She will discuss ways that teachers and parents can help young children learn essential friendship skills along with how this important form of social learning goes hand-in-hand with the emergence of “emotional intelligence.”

This presentation will review what to expect of children ages 2 through 6 years, including such common social problems as battles over toys, physical conflict, teasing, bossiness, shyness and social exclusion. It will consider how emotion-management skills interact with social learning.

The presentation will focus on the essential roles that teachers and parents play in supporting the development of friendship skills in young children, paying special attention to the problems of deciding WHETHER to let children “work it out” themselves; WHEN adults should get involved; and HOW teachers and parents can intervene positively and effectively.
