The War of 1812 nearly destroyed the United States. New England threatened to secede from the Union as the enemy blockaded the coast and burned Washington. But the United States emerged from this somewhat disastrous war stronger than before.
The War of 1812 did not bring Canada into the Union, as its promoters had promised, but it did bring the new nation a sense of unity and purpose, with heroes such as Decatur, Hull, and MacDonough, a national anthem, and a timeless symbol in “Old Ironsides.”
Join us for a lecture by Professor Robert Allison, Chair of the History Department at Suffolk University as he discusses the War of 1812. The lecture will be followed by a conversation and light appetizers and drinks. Sponsored by the Lowell Institute.
