Ten years ago, concerns about the marketing of provocative clothing and music focused on twelve or thirteen year olds. No more. The new pink and pretty “girlie-girl” culture encourages girls from infancy onward to believe that how they look matters more than who they are on the inside.

Peggy Orenstein, author of the New York Times best-seller “Cinderella Ate My Daughter,” discusses the path girls’ culture takes from toddler through teen. The professional and educational opportunities available to girls in 2012 abound – but, along with this, the new culture of girlhood also poses challenges to the self image, self-expression, sexuality and sexualization of young girls.

In this thought-provoking workshop, Ms. Orenstein underscores the potential negative impact of the new girlie-girl culture, and also argues persuasively that with awareness and recognition, parents and advocates can effectively counterbalance its influence.

The lecture will be followed by a book signing with Ms. Orenstein. Books will be available for purchase. Suggested donation for this event is $5.
