Dr. Mayer will provide an update on what’s happening in two of the more sensitive marine ecosystems: the Arctic and Gulf of Mexico.
Chosen to lead the National Academy of Sciences’ effort to assess the long-term impact of the Deepwater Horizon spill, Dr. Mayer’s presentation combines his knowledge of the Arctic with what he’s seen in the Gulf.
While unquestionably a tragedy in terms of loss of life and the amount of oil spilled, a series of fortuitous and Gulf-specific environmental factors prevented the Deepwater Horizon disaster from being even worse.
What if the spill happened in the fragile Arctic environment, where infrastructure is virtually non-existent and techniques to recover oil under the ice are poorly developed?
Larry will explore these questions and suggest new ways to prevent and respond to an Arctic spill.
The cost is $50/person for Seacoast Science Center members; $60/person for non-members and includes beverages and catered gourmet fare.
The evening begins with a 6:00 p.m. reception, followed by a catered gourmet dinner and presentation.
Beverages provided by Smuttynose Brewing Company.
Tickets must be purchased by March 22; dinners sell out early, so please do not delay.
