Exploring Zoo New England’s Contribution to Conservation and Research at the Zoos and in the Wild at Franklin Park Zoo's event: Science & Conservation Day.

The keynote address - Chimpanzee Futures in a Crowded World: Lessons from Western Uganda - will be given by Dr. Richard Wrangham and Dr. Elizabeth Ross.

For 25 years, Dr. Wrangham and Dr. Ross have collaborated inside and outside Uganda’s Kibale National Park to promote a long-term future for more than a thousand chimpanzees and tens of thousands of people.

Dr. Wrangham’s research team has worked with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to promote eco-tourism and protect the rainforest, uprooted thousands of wildlife snares and monitored the Kanyawara chimpanzee community, and discovered fascinating behaviors that are unique to Kibale.

Dr. Ross’s Kasiisi Project works in 14 forest edge government primary schools supporting conservation through programs that promote excellent education, healthy bodies and environmental stewardship for nearly 10,000 children.

Between them, they bring the message of wildlife conservation and hope to the next generation of a critically important growing population living in a volatile area containing some of the world’s most precious wildlife resources.

Following the keynote address, there will be panel discussions focused on behavior and enrichment studies as well as veterinary and husbandry studies.

There will also be an opportunity to go behind the scenes at the Zoo.
