Aleichem was the creator of Tevye the Dairyman, the stories that inspired Fiddler on the Roof, one of the world’s most beloved musicals.
While today recognized for his contributions to Yiddish literature and performing arts, Sholem Aleichem's own life story is equally as compelling as his characters.
Born “Sholem Rabinovitz” in Ukraine in 1859 to an impoverished family, Aleichem turned to his pen to support himself.
Dauber will recount Aleichem’s fascinating journey and rise to prominence as the literary voice of the Jewish masses.
Jeremy Dauber – Jeremy Dauber is a professor of Yiddish literature at Columbia University, where he also serves as director of the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies.
Aaron Lansky – Aaron Lansky is the author of Outwitting History, the story of his efforts to save Yiddish books, and is the founder of the Yiddish Book Center.
