While this trip was mainly to see wildlife, most of the land close to the villages was barren of animals due to over hunting.
Here, instead of wildlife we experienced enriching and mind-expanding interactions with the diverse and handsome peoples and their cultures, in an untamed, magnificent, colorful and partially Stone-Age world.
In the best of the seacoast villages, tribes live with much joy, and the experience made us think about the meaning of 'civilization' and of nature conservation, as well as the meaninglessness of 'stuff.' In contrast, the passionate and male-based society of the Highlanders still includes ritualistic clan warfare and witch hunting.
Further into the forests, in some of the most astonishing exhibits of the natural world, twenty species of dazzling birds-of-paradise present elaborate iridescent colors and wild tail plumes.
Join us as we explore this rapidly changing world of Papua New Guinea.
