Open to the public at no charge, doors will open at 7:00 pm on Monday, N0vember 17, 2014 and the discussion will begin promptly at 7:30.
The event will be held at Temple Isaiah, 55 Lincoln Street, Lexington, MA.
There is ample parking available.
Comprising the panel:
Christine Griffin, Executive Director, Disability Law Center;
Eric MacLeish, Attorney in the Class Action Suit against Bridgewater State Hospital; and State Senator Will Brownsberger, Chair, Joint Committee on the Judiciary.
The discussion will be moderated by:
Professor Marylou Sudders, NAMI Mass Executive Board and former DMH Commissioner
The sponsors note that
• Bridgewater State Hospital (BSH), a medium security correctional facility, not only houses mentally ill prisoners convicted of crimes but also people awaiting trial and evaluation for mental illness.
• Massachusetts is one of only two states where mentally ill persons in the criminal justice system are not treated in a facility run by the Department of Mental Health.
• Since 2009, three men have died at BSH while in restraints for an excessive time period or while being put into restraints improperly.
• After investigation, both Governor Patrick and the Disability Law Center have made recommendations for major reform of BSH.
