Annie Cohen-Solal takes the audience on a journey through artist Mark Rothko’s early childhood experiences as he immigrated from the Pale of Settlement to the United States at the age of ten.
Rothko went on to become one of the most celebrated American artists of our time despite the traumas he encountered from Latvia to America.
Cohen-Solal discusses Rothko’s memories of discrimination as well as his commitment to social struggles and how he came to develop his notable style of painting.
Her talk coincides with an exhibition at Harvard Art Museums called Rothko’s Harvard Murals, which will be on display until July 16, 2015.
In addition to her work on Mark Rothko, Annie Cohen-Solal has also published numerous other books, including Sartre, 1905-1980 and Leo and His Circle: The Life of Leo Castelli.
