It has been called the “Harvard of Secretarial Schools” and it educated over one hundred thousand women and men for office work.
Begun in 1911 in Providence, the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School expanded to Boston, New York and several other cities and became the premier school in the preparation for secretarial work of all kinds.
On Wednesday, November 11 at 7:30 pm, the Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston will hold a free opening reception for its exhibit on the long history of this well-known school.
Rose Doherty, author of the book Katharine Gibbs Beyond White Gloves, will give the kick-off talk and a tour of the exhibit.
The exhibit includes yearbooks, manuals, photographs, related secretarial topics including connections to Mad Men and famous secretaries both real and in fiction, and other school memorabilia.
Many of the displays have a philatelic and postal history connection.
Even if you did not graduate from the school, the exhibit is a fascinating look into the evolution of the modern secretary as well as a lesson in women’s history.
Wear your white gloves (no hat required) and you will receive a free ticket to the Museum and a Katharine Gibbs postage stamp.
