Join the Sudbury Historical Society on Sunday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sudbury Town Hall (322 Concord Road) for an illustrated talk, “A Little Bit of Sweden: The Story of the Svensk Kaffestuga.” The Svensk Kaffestuga, a Swedish Coffee House, was one of Sudbury’s most beloved restaurants for over fifty-five years.
SHS Trustee Elin Neiterman will give the talk accompanied by Lisa Forsberg, whose family owned the restaurant for over 36 years.
Lisa will share her collection of photos and memorabilia that tell the story of the restaurant.
Attendees will have an opportunity to taste some of the foods that were once served at the restaurant, including the famous Svensk Kaffestuga Swedish meatballs and Swedish cookies.
Paul Eke and his Swedish wife, Clara Eke, first opened the doors at 394 Boston Post Road in 1928.
Today Lotus Blossom Restaurant operates at the site.
In 1947, the restaurant was sold to Swedish cousins, Gertrude Forsberg and Sara Lundberg, from Worcester, Massachusetts.
Together, the two women ran the restaurant until they passed it on to their sons, Cliff Forsberg and Harry Lundberg, in the 1960’s.
Cliff and Harry cooked, managed and owned the restaurant, while their wives Grace and Doris held roles as hostesses, waitresses and kitchen staff.
The Svensk Kaffestuga was a favorite location not only for Sudbury residents, but also for diners who came from miles away.
This special restaurant served as a second home for many of the staff as well.
According to Forsberg, “Once you were there, you became family.” The SHS invites attendees to come and share their own memories of the Svensk Kaffestuga’s family, friends and food.
For anyone who ever visited the Svensk Kaffestuga, this is a presentation not to be missed.
