In August 1936, the world turned its attention to Nazi Germany while it hosted the Summer Olympics.
To divert attention from its antisemitic agenda and plans for territorial expansion, the regime exploited the games to dazzle spectators with an image of a peaceful, tolerant Germany.
Against the backdrop of racism in America, the story of the “Nazi” Olympics becomes much more complex.
In the era of Jim Crow, black and Jewish athletes were facing job discrimination, economic hardship, and social marginalization, but were sent to Berlin as competitors, representing the very nation that oppressed them.
Join us for a discussion exploring the stories and varied actions of individual athletes—from those who boycotted the games in protest to those who, like Jesse Owens, competed and won, refuting the Nazi myth of “Aryan” supremacy.
