On April 7th, Women Working for Oceans (W2O) will present “Beeps, Rumbles, and Blasts: How Human-Generated Noise Threatens Marine Life.”

Two pre-eminent scientists, who have been studying the impact of increasing noise below sea level, will be the keynote speakers: Dr. Christopher Clark, Director of Cornell University’s Bioacoustics Research Program and Dr. Scott Kraus, Vice President and Chief Scientist for Marine Mammals at the New England Aquarium.

Drs. Clark and Kraus are leading authorities on how ocean noise from sonar, seismic testing, and shipping affects how whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals communicate with one another during feeding, migration, breeding, and other important times.

The event is sponsored by the Boston-based Women Working for Oceans (W2O), in partnership with the New England Aquarium.

W2O’s mission is to inform people about the challenges facing our oceans and inspire them to take positive action to ensure a healthy, sustainable blue planet in the future.

Attendees will be encouraged to speak up and support legislation to stop seismic testing and to express concern about upcoming federal offshore oil and gas plans.

W2O will also encourage participants to “buy local” to help reduce consumption of goods shipped from overseas.
