A century ago, Mitzi Hajos (1889–1970) was a one-name star on Broadway: her press photos were marked “Mitzi,” and everyone knew who was meant.
But who were the photographers who burnished Mitzi’s image?
Many of them were the leading photographers of the day, influential tastemakers whose careers stretched from Broadway in the east to Hollywood on the West Coast.
Like Mitzi, some of these photographers – and the stars they captured – are forgotten today; others, like Nickolas Muray (in New York) and Ruth Harriet Louise (at MGM), remain important figures in the history of American photography.
Their story is the subject of “Mitzi!
Jewish Photographers and Stars of Broadway and Hollywood, 1910–1940,” a lecture and exhibit in the Jewish Heritage Center at the New England Historic Genealogical Society.
