Environmental Protection Agency have been working with the National Park Service to study carbon cycling – or the transfer of carbon through the atmosphere – and its impact on coastal dune habitats.
In this lecture, “Invasive Species and Carbon Cycling in Coastal Dunes of Cape Cod,” Dr. Robert Vincent of the MIT Sea Grant College Program and Rose M.
Martin of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education will discuss their work involving the effects of historic peat deposits and invasive plants.
With the increased risk of erosion from coastal storms which expose once-buried peat deposits – along with the challenge of controlling aggressive invasive species – this dynamic system faces an uncertain future.
Their research findings help inform conservation efforts on Cape Cod and provide a deeper understanding of carbon cycling in coastal dunes.
Robert Vincent, Ph.D., is the Marine Advisory Program Manager and Coastal Ecologist for the MIT Sea Grant College Program.
His work focuses on the ecology and restoration of freshwater wetland, estuarine, and marine systems.
Rose M.
Martin, Ph.D., works in the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education Postdoctoral Researcher at EPA Atlantic Ecology Division in Narragansett, RI.
She investigates impacts of human activity on ecosystem structure and function.
