Mardi Gras is French for 'Fat Tuesday.' The name comes from the need to use up fat, eggs and dairy products before the fasting and abstinence of Lent begins.
In Nice, French people wear giant masks in the Mardi Gras parade. In Binche, Belgium, people dress in colofrul clown costumes (the clowns are called gilles). Come celebrate Mardi Gras at The French Library, win our Best Costume contest, eat delicious crêpes, learn more about this Francophone tradition!
