Mayor Michelle Wu, in partnership with the King family, will join City leaders and Boston residents next week to attend the following services for the long time civil rights activist, community leader, educator, and former state representative Melvin ‘Mel’ King. The services to honor the life and legacy of Mel King include a wreath laying at Boston City Hall, a day of remembrance, and a funeral in the South End.

Wreath laying with City of Boston leaders, including City Council President Ed Flynn. This event will feature a brief speaking program, where Mayor Wu will read a proclamation declaring Tuesday, April 11 as a citywide day of remembrance for Mel King.

Students from the Boston Arts Academy will perform a tribute as part of the funeral service.
Due to limited capacity, tickets will be required for admission. Community tickets will be available to the public on a first come, first served basis on April 7 at unionboston.org/melking.
Additionally, the public will be able to sign a condolence book paying tribute to Mel King at Boston City Hall (3rd floor) and the Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building (1st floor & 2nd floor school committee room) from noon on Monday, April 10 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11.
Flags on City Hall Plaza will be at half staff until sunset on Tuesday, April 11.
