About the artist:

Balla Kouyaté learned how to play the balafon when he was just six years old. Today, he is regarded as one of the greatest balafon players from the Djeli or Griot tradition in Mali. The balafon (ancestor of the xylophone) was given to Balla’s ancestors by nobles in the 12th century and has remained in his family ever since. His talents have been featured on at least 45 albums. Recently, Kouyaté recorded 'This Little Light of Mine' for Yo-Yo Ma’s record, Songs of Joy and Peace.
