Memorial Congregational Church of Sudbury presents the third of six concert events this season on Saturday January 30 at 7:30 PM. New England soprano celebrity Rebecca Grimes and guitarist Dave McLellan team up to perform a full recital of delightful diversity in music for voice and guitar.

The program, entitled ‘Divers Toyes’, includes lute songs by John Dowland, the haunting Bachianas Brasileiras #5 of Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos, the block-buster Seven Popular Spanish Songs by Manuel de Falla, Estudios Sencillos for solo guitar by Leo Brouwer, Letters from Composers of Dominick Argento, and Hungarian Matyas Seiber’s setting of the The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear. Children will love it.

The title ‘Divers Toyes’ was inspired by the song ‘Fine Knacks for Ladies’ by John Dowland, the great 16th century lutenist and composer. The narrator in ‘Fine Knacks’ is a street vendor who sings about the trinkets he sells to ladies looking for a suitor. But he warns all his customers that when they look for a man, it’s not about the trinkets, it’s about the heart of the buyer. It’s what inside that counts. From the third verse:

“Within this pack pins points laces and gloves
And divers toyes fitting a country fair
But in my heart where duty serves and loves,
Turtles and twins, Count’s brood, a heav’nly pair
Happy the heart that thinks of no removes.”

“Divers Toyes” describes the Grimes/McLellan program of musical diversity, and it’s all fun. The music spans a broad range of styles, languages, and moods, and has something for everyone including small children.
