Hand injury postpones much-anticipated Brahms Double Concerto
which was to feature father & son, both BSO musicians, as conductor & soloist.

Two extraordinary, local, teenage string musicians will take center stage at The New Philharmonia Orchestra’s Newton Centre performance on February 6 & 7. Francesca Bass, 14, a freshman at Brookline High School, will perform as violin soloist. Lev Mamuya, 13, an 8th-grader at The Rashi School in Newton, will perform as cello soloist, alongside the New Phil’s 75-member orchestra. Also on the program is the great Brahms Symphony No. 4.

Ms. Bass will solo in the first movement of the Wieniawski Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor. Mr. Mamuya will solo in the first movement of the Dvoøák Cello Concerto. Performances will take place in the late-Victorian surroundings of the First Baptist Church, corner of Beacon and Centre Streets in Newton Centre: Saturday, February 6 at 8pm and Sunday, February 7 at 3 pm. Tickets: $28 Adults, $25 Seniors, $10 Students, $65 Family (advance purchase only - 2 Adults, 2 Students). To purchase tickets or get more information, call 617.527.9717 or visit www.newphil.org.

This program replaces the previously-scheduled Brahms Double Concerto, which was to have featured Maestro (and Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist) Ron Knudsen conducting his son, BSO cellist Sato Knudsen, and Principal Second Violin Haldan Martinson as soloists. A hand injury sustained by the younger Knudsen will postpone that work until next season. “I have wanted to experience this piece of music with Sato for 27 years,” says Maestro Knudsen. “Now we will simply have to wait one more year.”

About violinist Francesca Bass, 14, Brookline: A winner of local and international string competitions, Ms. Bass studies violin at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and is concertmaster of the Youth Symphony there. Her current teacher is Anait Arutunian, also a Brookline resident; she began her violin studies at age 4 with Lilia Muchnik. She has appeared with the New England String Ensemble at Jordan Hall, with Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Chang for the Deval Patrick gubernatorial inauguration, and with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a program of Latin and Celtic music. Her talent comes naturally: her mother is a Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist and her father is a pianist on the Boston Conservatory faculty.

About cellist Lev Mamuya, 13, Newton: Mr. Mamuya gave his first solo recital at age five, has been an avid chamber musician since the age of six, and appeared as a soloist with the Cape Cod Symphony at age eight. He won the Newton Symphony concerto competition in 2007. In 2008, he appeared as a soloist on the PBS radio show “From the Top” as well as on the TV program “From the Top at Carnegie Hall.” In addition to enjoying his appearances as a soloist, he plays in two string quartets and relishes opportunities to perform outreach concerts in schools and nursing homes. In his free time, Lev enjoys reading, hiking, playing video games and playing sports, particularly basketball; he is a fervent Boston sports fan.

About The New Phil: The New Philharmonia Orchestra, founded in 1995, is a 75-member non-professional regional orchestra based in Newton. Its motto, Music For All, encapsulates the spirit of the organization: The New Phil presents programs of diverse repertoire of classical and light classical music, performed by high-caliber musicians, for the enjoyment of audiences of all ages and experiences.
