Both originating out of Cambridge’s folk scene, Alastair and Vanessa combine their folk roots with a shared ability to engage family audiences with interactive songs that get everyone moving, grooving, singing, jumping, and activating their imaginations.
Earlier this year, Alastair Moock released A Cow Says Moock, his sixth album and first specifically for kids and families. The songs blend tradition, tenderness, and inspired silliness. There are four covers on the record – tributes to American musical heroes Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Mississippi John Hurt, and Taj Mahal. The seven originals are cut from the same cloth. As silly as they get (and several get awfully silly) or as contemporary the subject matter (particularly in the case of “Two Mommies”), the songs are all painted in the vibrant hues of America’s roots music heritage. The album won a 2010 Parents' Choice 'Recommended' Award, was short-listed for the 2010 American Library Association Notable Children's Recordings List, and was a Boston Children's Music Favorite Album of the Year.
About Vanessa Trien’s performances, Boston Children’s Music writes, “Vanessa's shows are perfect. It's hard to explain and I can't quite put my finger on what it is they do differently, but whatever it is, it really gets the kids (and parents) excited!...She has some sort of magical energy that makes all of her shows super fun...' The energy of her shows carries over into her two recordings for kids and families, Carnival Day (2009) and Hot Air Balloon (2006). Her original songs combine well-crafted and imaginative lyrics with catchy melodies and sophisticated arrangements that inspire families to sing, dance and jump along. Among other accolades, both of Vanessa’s albums won Parents’ Choice and iParenting Media Awards. Vanessa also was a Boston Childrens’ Music Favorite Performance of the Year.
