Agassiz at the Armory
The tiny, cooperative preschool that lost its home to encroaching development has banded together and built a new one. They celebrate its completion with a CD-Release Party, live concert and fantastical circus extravaganza.
Somerville - October 13, 2010
Given notice in 2006 that they would have to leave their Cambridge home of 39 years, this committed community of 40 children, parents and friends began an improbable quest to find and build a new school. And now they’ve done it. Come celebrate the success of this miraculous, modern-day-barn-raising.
The main event: the release of their double CD “Working On A Building – Music From The Agassiz Preschool Community,” produced by Agassiz parent and noted local musician, Andrew Mazzone.
Preschool-A-Palooza: Saturday, Oct. 30 at Arts on the Armory, 191 Highland Ave. from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Headlining this raucous afternoon of live musical performances, face painting, stilt-walking and other circus-style mayhem are friends of the Agassiz community: Jeremy Lyons, Hugh Hanley, Dana Colley, Asa Brebner, Fred Griffeth, Linda Viens, Michael Romanyshyn, Mariachi Internacional, The Phantom Powers and Andrew Mazzone.
Tickets $5 for kids, $10 adults, $25 for a family. CD’s: $10 with advance tickets, $12 at event, $15 regularly. All sales benefit the school.

The new facility is located at 184 Summer Street, on top of Spring Hill. Agassiz will be the first cooperative preschool in Somerville. After a successful four-year $350,000 capital campaign and over $400,000 worth of parent-donated skilled and unskilled labor, the beautifully renovated three-story Victorian is finished. And Agassiz is ready to bring their unique style of education, family and fun to the Somerville community.
“Our neighborhood in Cambridge has been a huge support system since 1971 and we owe them a lot,” says Agassiz Director Tracey Kaplan. “Now we are moving up the hill to Somerville and bringing our community to a place that is reflective of our philosophy. Four years ago, some said, ‘You will never find or afford the ideal space.’ But we found one. And it’s absolutely beautiful.”
