The First Lutheran Church of Boston Dedicates 3 New Organ Stops on Reformation Weekend October 30-31, 2010.

The long-awaited new stops arrived in late August but have not been used publicly. The first public sound they utter should not be before their consecration on Reformation Sunday, October 31. Reformation weekend will be powerful this year. It is designed with a series of organ events to introduce a wide range of audiences to our newly completed pipe organ. On Saturday October 30, a world renowned improviser premieres his fairy tale “Principal Paul” to introduce families with children to the mysterious world of the pipe-trolls. This family event will make a use of the “Vogelgesang” stop--a wonderful little pipe blowing into a bowl of water, imitating a bird-whistle.

The actual organ dedication will take place in the beginning of our Reformation Celebration Service preceded by an extended organ prelude at 3:30 p.m., featuring the new stops for the first time in public. The audience will be informed via a program booklet about which stops are being used. The Reformation Service will feature the ever popular and classic, “A Mighty Fortress” and other Hymns. Another special treat for this day is the opening chorus from Bach’s Cantata 194, a piece he wrote for the dedication of the Hildebrandt organ in Ströhmtal, Germany.

It is quite amazing how much these stops add to the already superb instrument. The now complete three-reed chorus on the Rückpositive by itself has an impressive full sound. The Vox Humana on the Great has a mighty buzz, and the Cornet 2’ is a “bright little cry” as Ralph Richards, one of the organ builders, put it when he first heard the few samples I have uploaded to www.karosi.org. Ralph will be in Boston for the weekend as he is looking forward to returning to FLC and hearing the newly completed instrument. He would be happy to see many FLC members and answer any questions about our organ, his brainchild.

First Lutheran Church of Boston regularly hosts free and paid concert events as part of our Music Outreach Program which shares the Gospel through the universal language of music.

  • This is a great event for anyone, especially children, looking to understand how a mechanical pipe organ works and further understand the role music plays in telling a story.
