Bill, who grew up locally, has been writing songs in the best American folk-music traditions for more than 40 years. His lyrics capture the common and uncommon moments of our lives, set to exquisitely crafted, memorable melodies. The Folk Chorale will bring you some of Bill’s best known songs—All God’s Critters (Got a Place in the Choir), River, and The Roseville Fair, and some less-known gems too.
After touring and playing concerts for over 41 years, Bill Staines is still going strong, performing more than 175 shows a year. He is one of the most durable and beloved singers on the folk music scene today. Staines has twenty-six recordings to his credit and has written over three hundred songs, many of which have been recorded by the likes of Peter, Paul, and Mary, Makem and Clancy, Nanci Griffith, Glen Yarborough, and Jerry Jeff Walker. His music is sung at campfires and folk music gatherings, in homes and churches, all around the country.
The Family Folk Chorale’s 60 singers—aged 4 to 85—cast the songs across upon a colorful intergenerational palette. The concert is complete with solos by Bill Staines, duets and section numbers by members of the Chorale, and whole ensemble songs--variety and fun sure to appeal to all ages. Artistic Director, Chris Eastburn comments, “In Bill Staines’ music, you find a rich collection of lyrics and infectious tunes that reflect a broad range of human experience: playful and rousing choruses (“All God’s Critters”), tender expressions of a parent (“Child of Mine”), as well as universal refrains about the arc of life and our common humanity (“River” and “Crossing the Water”) with threads of optimism and joy throughout.”
The Folk Chorale’s band, featuring some of New England’s most versatile instrumentalists, includes Gary Backstrom of the Gary Backstrom Band, Dan Dick of Outrageous Fortune, Matt Laurence of the Secret Service and the trio Plume Giant. Members of the Lexington Waldorf School chorus will join the Chorale for several numbers. And the audience will round out the show as they clap hands, tap feet, and sing along!
Bill Staines is “one of the most admired and imitated writers on the contemporary folk circuit…(he writes) pensive, probing narratives made especially memorable by their ability to translate the common details of common lives in songs of uncommon elegance and beauty.”
The Austin American-Statesman
“The Family Folk Chorale is what folk music is all about–or what it should be all about– people coming together as a community, crossing generations, and singing because it’s what they love to do.”
–Matt Smith, Manager, Club Passim
“Bill Staines’ songs just make me SMILE!”
