Benjamin Zander conducts the senior-most orchestra in the NEC Preparatory School.

As the YPO prepares to tour Europe this summer, performing in Vienna and the Czech Republic, and because 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Gustav Mahler, and because Zander has been a powerful advocate for Mahler throughout his conducting career, it is no surprise that the orchestra will take a Mahler symphony as part of its tour repertory.

However, there is nothing commonplace about a youth orchestra playing Mahler's extraordinarily difficult and emotionally profound Ninth Symphony. Come hear this preview of the tour performances.

The concert also includes the Tchaikovsky Rococo Variations with concerto competition winner Jonah Ellsworth (in photo), who is also principal cellist of the orchestra.
