The Concord Orchestra presents its annual Family Concert on Sunday December 4, 2005. Local celebrity Joyce Kulhawik of CBS4 News narrates the popular “Babar the Elephant” by Francis Poulenc.
Joyce Kulhawik, Arts and Entertainment Anchor at CBS4 News, leads the audience through the story of Babar, with musical commentary from the orchestra. Poulenc’s musical rendition starts with Babar’s birth, the death of his mother from a huntsman’s bullet, his adoption by a indulgent rich lady who dresses him in fine suits and gives him a motorcar, his return to his beloved forest, and his election as King.
Continuing the animal theme, the orchestra will play dances from Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s ballet “Spalicek”, based on folk tales and nursery rhymes. The dancing animals include Puss and Boots, the lion, the mouse, the sparrowhawk, and the bumblebee. Stravinsky’s “Circus Polka” also has an elephant connection. It was written for the Barnum and Bailey Circus and was dedicated to “a young elephant.”
Two singing groups will join the Concord Orchestra for some holiday music. Custom Blend, an acapella singing group from Acton, and members of the Concord Academy Chorus will sing Leroy Anderson's Christmas Festival. Custom Blend will do an acapella version of Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Keith Daniel, music director at Concord Academy, directs both groups.
