Celebrates the Music of the Grateful Dead:
A Family-Friendly Grateful Dead Experience
Arlington Town Hall, Arlington, MA
November 20th, 2011, 3:00pm
Boston’s premier intergenerational chorus—The Family Folk Chorale—is offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to music-lovers of all ages on November 20th, 2011, celebrating the music of the Grateful Dead with their signature family-friendly style. It promises to be afternoon full of soulful and transporting songs, energized dancing, tender ballads, and jubilant anthems.
The Family Folk Chorale, under Christopher Eastburn’s artistic direction, finds a way to dig deeply into the work of folk and pop artists, to find the heart of each song. As they have with the music of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, and many new songwriters, the Chorale explores the depth of possibilities that come from combining great music with a range of voices, ages, and life experiences.
A father sings to his daughter, the women reminisce about the abandon of their youth, the kids tell a rollicking tall-tale adventure story, all voices sing together to reveal the sweetness and the power of our common humanity.
The afternoon of November 20th promises a fresh take on the music of the Grateful Dead. The Family Folk Chorale concert will feature favorite songs including Ripple, Franklin’s Tower, Touch of Grey, and Fire on the Mountain.
Jam band veterans drummer Greg Vasso of Max Creek and Jiggle the Handle will reunite with guitarist Gary Backstrom and keyboardist Paulie Wolstencroft (also of Jiggle), bassist Matt Laurence, and multi-instrumentalist Dan Dick will provide sensational instrumentals. An area of the Arlington Town Hall will be set aside for dancing, and the afternoon will include a silent auction and sale of home baked goods at the intermission.
Just who were the Grateful Dead? Now known as the quintessential 60’s jam band, several of their members began playing together in 1964 as a traditional old-timey jug band—bringing the music of the ‘20’s and 30’s to the San Francisco area’s folk revival scene.
They played together as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions, playing traditional tunes and instruments (including a jug!).
As many folk-based acts “went electric”—most famously Bob Dylan—so did the musicians who would become the Grateful Dead. Their style combined traditional American folk and blues, new electronic instrumentation, diverse percussion, covers of tunes by everyone from the Beatles to Johnny Cash, and their own original songs with mystical lyrics by Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow.
This eclectic band saw little mainstream success in the 30 years they played together, but inspired a devoted following. Their music continues to live on as, in turn, covers of their songs have been done by everyone from Jimmy Buffet to the Indigo Girls. And now, by the Family Folk Chorale!
“The Family Folk Chorale is what folk music is all about–or what it should be all about– people coming together as a community, crossing generations, and singing because it’s what they love to do.”
–Matt Smith, Manager, Club Passim
