Hartenbach and Johnston’s friendship goes back over 30 years, when they met in college during Daniel’s legendary “Songs of Pain” era. In the past several years Hartenbach has toured the U.S. and abroad as Johnston’s guitarist and music director.
Daniel Johnston’s songs have made him the songwriter-of-choice of the indie scene. The Simpsons creator Matt Groening has called him his favorite songwriter, while Kurt Cobain listed Daniel’s album Yip/Jump Music among his favorites and wore Johnston’s iconic “Hi, How Are You” t-shirt at the 1992 MTV Music Video Awards. He was also the subject of the Sundance Film Festival award-winning documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston.
David Bowie described Johnston’s music as, 'Beautiful melodies, fine if painful lyrics, and a searching poignancy that clutches the heart like iced velvet.' But Daniel’s talents don’t end with his music. He is also a renowned “outsider artist,” whose work has been displayed worldwide, including a showing at the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial. His first comic book, Space Ducks, was released in March of this year.
The evening officially kicks off the release of Everything’s OK … If You Look at It That Way, an album of Brett Hartenbach’s music done by friends, including Johnston and area favorites Dawn Boyer, The RMS Five, T.S. Baker and Wooden Eye, who will serve as the house band for the evening. Also appearing will be Boston Music Award winner Rachael Davis, LoRoHo and Doug Smith & Dave Morgan. Hartenbach has produced and/or played with all of the artists who will be performing. Also contributing to the album, but not performing at the show, are Anne Grasser, Bedroxx, Jim Scafide, and Stan Moeller.
The recording, which was spearheaded by Wooden Eye drummer, Joe Rogers, will help Hartenbach, who was diagnosed with a grade III anaplastic astrocytoma in late 2010, with his medical and living expenses.
