A community chorus rarely gets a chance to present a world premiere of any kind. But for such a group to give the first performance of a major work by an internationally acclaimed composer is remarkable.

The Cambridge Community Chorus is proud to announce that the premiere of Luis Bacalov’s Cantos para Nuestros Tiempos (Songs for Our Times): The Cambridge Psalms, will take place at Sanders Theatre, Cambridge, at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2006, in the presence of Maestro Bacalov.

The warm relationship between the chorus and the Argentine-born composer, who won an Oscar in 1995 for the score of Il Postino, goes back to 2002, when the group presented the North American premiere of his Misa Tango.

Bacalov’s Cantos are written for chorus, soloists and orchestra, and set texts from Old Testament psalms in Spanish, Italian, Latin, Hebrew, Aramaic and English to accessible, culturally wide-ranging music that is by turns lyrical and dramatic.

Bacalov’s writing is outstanding, he says, for its rich orchestration and rhythmic expressiveness. He points to the composer’s use of unusual instruments like alto flute, bass clarinet, contra-bassoon, and celesta, in addition to standard symphonic forces, and to the constant changes of meter that give the work its protean energy and lively vernacular quality.

To complement Bacalov’s Cantos, Thomas has chosen to round out the program with Mozart’s Missa Brevis in B flat, KV 275. The piece showcases Mozart’s genius for writing enchantingly for both strings and voices, says Thomas, and makes a fitting continuation of the composer’s 250th birthday celebrations.

Soloists are Barbara Kilduff (soprano), Krista River (mezzo-soprano) and Marcus DeLoach (baritone).
