During this recital, Hodgkinson will not only be playing the piano, but will introduce a new piece, 'as well as it can be played.'
The Gramercy Piano Trio, featuring Hodgkinson on piano, violinist Sharan Leventhal, and cellist Jonathan Miller, will be premiering the Gunther Schuller Piano Trio.
Hodgkinson completed his Bachelor of Music degree with honors at New England Conservatory in 1976, attending NEC during the era in which Gunther Schuller served as President, and was also soloist under Schuller while on a fellowship to Tanglewood.
Hodgkinson is thrilled to be debuting this piece composed by a visionary who has composed over 180 works, ranging from orchestral and solo works to jazz.
This commission has been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.
Hodgkinson will also be performing J.S.
Bach’s beloved Goldberg Variations, a masterpiece that is not approached lightly and only when the performer has a poignant interpretation to share.
Also on the program are piano pieces by Gabriel Fauré, which are sure to be emblematic of Fauré’s ability to connect Romanticism with a more modern sound, diverging from the use of standard harmonies.
