To celebrate, WGBH’s Classical New England (CNE) Radio, First Lutheran Church of Boston, and the Boston American Guild of Organists are hosting a free, all-day concert featuring Bach’s iconic and timeless music.
Starting at 6am with a “sunrise serenade” from the cello ensemble Bachianas Bostoneiras, and concluding at 6pm, after a fiery recital by Trinity Church organist Jacob Street, Bach Around the Clock will be an open house concert event and community-wide celebration of Bach’s music for everyone.
“No composer or musician has had as significant and timeless an effect on music as Bach,” said Benjamin Roe, managing director of Classical New England.
“On Saturday, March 16, we invite the entire community and people of all ages to an open house to enjoy, celebrate and discover the music that continues to inspire new generations and new genres of music.”
CNE (99.5 FM in Boston and New Hampshire; 88.7 FM in Providence; 89.5 on Nantucket; 89.7 HD2 throughout Greater Boston) will live stream the entire concert on classicalnewengland.org and will broadcast select performances on March 21, Bach’s actual birthday.
Performances from renowned musicians will begin on the hour between 6am and 6pm.
In addition to Bachianas Bostoneiras, other notable performers and ensembles include First Lutheran Church Music Director and organist Bálint Karosi; harpsichordist Richard Egarr, performing with members of the Handel & Haydn Society;cellist and former New England Conservatory president Laurence Lesser; Boston Conservatory harpist Ina Zdorovetchi; noted “archguitar” artist Peter Blanchette; and violinists from the studio of acclaimed NEC violin teacher Donald Weilerstein.
In between performances, CNE hosts will share stories about Bach, his music, and the legacy he has left centuries after his death.
Performances are free and open for the public to come and go as their time allows; reserved balcony seats can be purchased.
Free childcare will be available from 10am to 2pm for children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years.
Attendees can purchase advance tickets for a special “Bach’s Lunch.” For more information, visit bach_birthday_2013.eventbrite.com.
