Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was the result of the composer’s collaboration with Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
Conceived as a series of choreographed episodes, it was first published in 1912 for four-hand piano, which is the form in which it will be heard in tonight’s concert.
At the first ballet performance in May 1913, choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky, the avant garde nature of the music and choreography resulted in a near riot.
A staple of orchestral literature, Sacre is a favorite with audiences, and the original Nijinsky choreography has been reconstructed by the Joffrey Ballet in the video presentation
that will be shown that evening.
