It was the Master Drummers that inspired the first WOMAD (world of music, arts and dance) festival in 1982, igniting the world music scene and influencing such well-known pop stars as Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, The Clash and the Grateful Dead.
Performing with the Royal Drummers will be the Mombasa Party, a female vocal and string ensemble of unusual power hailing from Kenya. These Taarab artists combine Indian film music with Swahili for an experience that is mysterious and visceral. Full of energy, grace and pure athleticism, these thrilling performers present an evening of the rhythms and dancing that accompany their nation’s rituals and ceremonies.
The Royal Drummers of Burundi will appear at The Music Hall on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 7:30 P.M. Tickets range from $42 - $20 and can be purchased at The Music Hall box office (28 Chestnut St., Portsmouth), on the phone at (603) 436-2400, or online at www.themusichall.org.
