About John Tchicai: Approaching jazz from a wide scope, Afro-Danish-American composer, saxophonist, and teacher John Tchicai’s music is internationally known for its compelling sense of rhythm, freedom, spirituality, and freshness. A leading exponent of the 1960’s jazz avant-garde scene, Tchicai has recorded with artists from John Coltrane to John Lennon, founded ensembles including New York Art Quartet and Cadentia Nova Danica, composes for jazz and classical ensembles, and is the first recipient of a lifetime grant for jazz performance from the State of Denmark.
“... his sound is cool, weightless, his style built on graceful, logical lines, and his writing can just as soon invoke Monk's angular logic and the blues as an African melody or rhythm..' (Fernando Gonzalez, The Boston Globe)
