The talented duo's wide-ranging cultural heritage (Mahal is the daughter of legendary blues musician Taj Mahal and Brown is rooted in the grooves of her native New Zealand) informs its energetic live shows with rich organic soul and blues roots as well as rich harmonies and beautifully crafted songs.
Fredericks Brown's influences range from Nina Simone and Sly and the Family Stone to more contemporary groove-based ensembles, and its newest release is Glass House Mountains.
The Love Experiment is a collective of producers, singer-songwriters, and musicians who joined forces in 2010 while attending college in Boston.
Their sound combines the collective influences of J Dilla, Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus, D’Angelo, Billie Holiday, and Earth Wind and Fire.
Their unique brand of retro-futuristic soul music has been compared to artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Thundercat, and King.
The Love Experiment is led by New Orleans native Charles Burchell, and features a cast of musicians ranging anywhere between four to 14 musicians at any given performance.
Some have dubbed them 'the broken social scene of R&B!' Vocalists Kim Mayo and Sami Danger give the band its voice and drummer Burchell writes the lyrics, composes, and arranges a lot of the music.
As the years have progressed, the Love Experiment has become a true collective, as most of the members write for the band and/or produce the music.
The band has shared the stage with Talib Kweli, Iman Omari, Si * Se, Retro Stefson, and has recently been performing packed shows in New York and Boston at venues such as Webster Hall, the Bitter End, the Middle East, and the Bowery Electric.
The band is currently in the process of releasing its debut project, a series of EPs entitled The Love Suites, which is expected to be released in the fall of 2014.
