8:30 pm – 9:00 pm MIT Glass Band performs Looper

The MIT Glass Band was formed in 2012 as a collaborative project between the Glass Lab and MIT’s Center for Arts, Science and Technology (CAST).

Working with Professor Evan Ziporyn and visiting artist Mark Stewart, Glass Band students explored the sounds of glass and its musical possibilities.

The early stages of the curriculum focused on the various types of sounds made by glass and progressed to the students designing, creating, tuning and playing the glass instruments.

Stewart, the musical guru of the group, worked with the group to create an understanding of ensemble play.

The culmination of the Glass Band’s first year included two performances at the April CAST Marathon Concert in MIT’s Kresge Auditorium.

The first, entitled “Looper,” consisted of band members, one-by-one, adding their instruments into a gradually built tapestry of sound.

The artKitchen Café Performance Series is funded in part by the following cultural councils: Abington, Bridgewater, E.

Bridgewater, Brockton, Dedham, Duxbury, Easton, Hanson, Hingham, Mansfield, Middleborough, Plympton, Randolph, Rockland, Sharon.

These local agencies support the arts with funding provided by Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

We are grateful for their support.

Thank you also to Walgreens for their support.
