Faculty Recital with Franco Leon (piano) and guest Michael Brazile (harpsichord).
Performance includes piano works by Granados, Albeniz, Grieg, Chopin, and Einaudi, and harpsichord works by Ennemond Gaultier, Jean-Henry D’Anglebert, and Francois Couperin.
In the suite in C-major, harpsichordist Jean-Henry D’Anglebert took original lute pieces by lutenist Ennemond Gaultier and transcribed them for solo harpsichord.
In doing so, he paid tribute to the musical brilliance of the father of the French Baroque lute school, while simultaneously showing the distinctive expressivity the harpsichord could bring to the repertoire.
Though labeled simply as a Sarabande in the manuscript, Ennemond Gaultier’s Sarabande in A-major is actually a chaconne.
With his characteristic tunefulness, Gaultier takes a theme which appears as an off-the-cuff riff at first hearing, and binds it to what is usually a rather short dance form, giving us an extended work whose beauty belies its simplicity.
The five preludes from Francois Couperin’s the Art of Touching the Harpsichord are, according to Leon, a summary expression of the 17th-century French harpsichord and lute style.
Underpinned by an unrivaled use of the lute’s style brisé (broken style) textures, these preludes are full of wistful harmonies and tuneful melodies that show the harpsichord capable of supreme emotional expression.
