Perfect for families, this is a program of musical story-telling, lasting one hour with no intermission.

WPRI-TV's Steve Aveson will narrate the story of Babar the Elephant, set to music by the French composer, Francis Poulenc.

Your children will be able to see kids just like them performing in the PALS Children's Chorus, with American composer Aaron Copland’s lighthearted folksong arrangements, which are repetitive and fun. Your child will be singing them on the way home.

The winner of our Young Artist Competition will perform a concerto movement with the orchestra. Last year's winner, Julia Noone, performed a very difficult violin concerto, and she was just 17 years old!

Rounding out the program will be a short piece by Pulitzer Prize winner Christopher Rouse, entitled the Infernal Machine. The name alone should tell you it will be loud, rhythmic, and lots of fun.

After the concert, children will be encouraged to come to the stage to see the instruments and meet the performers.

TIPS↑ top

  • Before you arrive, familiarize your children with Babar the Elephant. There are many books available at your local library, to help acquaint the kids. Work with them to imagine what different sounds they might hear at the concert. What would an elephant sound like, musically? What might the 'Infernal Machine' sound like? Find a recording of the Copland songs (be sure you find the 'first set', which include songs like 'I Bought Me a Cat'). Your kids will enjoy the show more if they are familiar with the music beforehand.
