They have played the main stage at the Newport Folk Festival, have been featured on the History Channel, Lifetime Network and CNN, opened for Josh Ritter, Grace Potter, Lucius, Langhorne Slim and have been been covered by NPR, New York Times, Esquire Magazine, Wall Street Journal, American Songwriter, among others.
They have released four full-length albums, including their latest, Neighbors and Strangers.
THE SHANG HI LOS formed in the outskirts of Boston in late 2019 – just in time for the pandemic.
Undeterred, they released their first single and video (and musical antidote of sorts), 'Sway Little Player' in late 2020.
Featuring the dual harmony vocals of co-singer- guitarists Jen D'Angora and Dan Kopko atop the tenacious rhythm of drummer Chuck Ferreira and bassist Lee Harrington, the song earned the band ample airplay and attention, including Coolest Song In The World honors on Little Steven's Underground Garage.
The band's 2021 EP 'Kick It Like A Wicked Bad Habit' (Rum Bar Records, 2021) gave listeners a sweet sampling of the Shangs' range of flavors, from Mott The Hoople 70s glam ('Skipping Records'), to dreamy VU-inspired balladry ('Stay'), to Pixies-style alt pop ('Funeral Home Mint').
The Shangs draw on the wealth of collective experience of its members - hailing from bands including The Neighborhoods, Watts, Eddie Japan, Lonely Leesa & The Lost Cowboys, The Downbeat 5, Jenny Dee & The Deelinquents, and The Dents.
Their first full-length 'Aces Eights & Heartbreaks' (Rum Bar Records, Jan. 2023) has already netted them a second Coolest Song In The World title for the Spaghetti Western-inspired “Billy,” and highlights influences ranging from indie rock and power pop crunch (“Aces Eights & Heartbreaks”, “Takes One to Know One”, “These Four Walls”) to girl group harmonies (“Monsieur Valentine”) and punk-tinged stompers (“Plymouth Rock,” “Castaway”), spurring comparisons to X, Cheap Trick and Blondie.
The Shangs recently added wizard guitarist Chad Raleigh (formerly of The Rationales) to the mix to take their live and studio sound to 11, and are working on a follow up LP, scheduled for release in early 2024.
