Festival of Music and Landscape at Olmsted Park
Hours: | 10:00 am to 1:00 pm |
In/Outdoor: | Outdoor |
Cost: | Free |
Category: | Music & Concerts |
This family-oriented festival is free, open to the public, and will feature concerts and a variety of participatory activities geared primarily to younger children ages 3 to 10. All activities will directly or indirectly involve music, sound, or some connection to the outdoor landscape and nature. For further information on the Sounds and Scenes Festival, contact Brookline Adult & Community Education at 617-730-2700, or go to www.brooklineadulted.org.
In addition to the festivities taking place during the 10:00 am to 1:00 pm period, three local organizations are offering activities involving music or sound and landscape immediately before and after the festival. For “early birds,” the Emerald Necklace Bird Club will be offering a rare family-friendly “Birding by Ear” walk at 9:00 am. Usually a topic and skill reserved for more advanced birders, birding by ear in this case will be introduced to beginner and novice birders by Stephen Baird, the Club’s expert birder. Beginning at the Daisy Field Parking Lot on Willow Pond Road off the Jamaicaway, leader Baird hopes to spot black-capped chickadees, yellow warblers, northern flickers, and perhaps a great blue heron. He pledges to end the walk on the Brookline side in time for walkers to catch most, if not all, of the festival activities from 10:00 to 1:00.
For parents with babies and toddlers in strollers, Diane Pokorny Wilson of StrollerFit will offer a fun and challenging outdoor workout at 9:30 in front of the parking lot on Pond Avenue, off Route 9. Her 60-minute StrollerFit class, which meets regularly at Larz Anderson Park, the Arnold Arboretum, and Franklin Park, moves to Olmsted Park this day. She promises that participants will work up a sweat while their little ones will be happily entertained by the sights all around, the birds chirping, the ducks on the pond, and the trees blooming. Diane invites parents interested in taking the class to call her at 617-429-6369.
At the end of the festival, the Brookline GreenSpace Alliance offers a 1:00 pm “Sounds of Spring” walk through portions of Olmsted Park. Brookline park activist and Friends of Leverett Pond co-chair Hugh Mattison will take adults on a one-mile leisurely exploration of this Frederick Law Olmsted-designed “Emerald Necklace” park. Highlights include a stop at the newly-restored babbling brook to explore its sounds and hydrology. This walk will begin at the GreenSpace Alliance table near Allerton Overlook.
