This concert is to celebrate the restoration project for the historic Chapel's beautiful building and pipe-organ The William Stevens Organ in the Chapel is a “one-of-a-kind”; the only surviving example of the quality of Stevens’ workmanship that contributed to Boston’s renown for organ-building in America in the nineteenth century.
William Stevens built the hand pump console style organ for St. Anna’s Chapel in 1863. The 14 stop, pedal bass organ is comprised entirely of original and in tact parts, including the delicately inscribed ivory labels on the stops. The pipes and bellows are set inside the corner wall. During services or concerts Acolytes or volunteers took turns pumping the bellows by hand! Although the organ in in need of full restoration, it is playable and has a lovely sound.
Ms. Rice and Ms. Woodward have generously volunteered to perform on the William Stevens Organ to celebrate its heritage and contribute to the fund drive to restore it to its former glory.
