Fourteen Greater Boston area musicians will come together on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m., at the Oliver Ames High School auditorium, 100 Lothrop St. in North Easton, to perform acoustic blues, rock, folk, country, and bluegrass music to support School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SoW), a nonprofit organization that helps shrink the gaps in education one child at a time by providing academic support and advocacy for children experiencing homelessness.

The performance is being organized by SoW and Strike a Chord Concerts for Charity, an ongoing effort to support nonprofit organizations and benefits by raising money and awareness through music. The event is family friendly and donations will be accepted at the door. Artists will also donate proceeds from their CDs to SoW.

Founded four years ago by Cheryl Opper of Easton, SoW provides one-on-one afterschool tutoring, new backpacks and school supplies, advocacy with schools and teachers, parent and family educational support, and post-shelter services. The concert will benefit SoW’s participation in the upcoming Rodman Ride For Kids on Saturday, Sept. 27.

To help prepare for the upcoming school year, SoW is asking concert attendees to bring one new school supply from the following list: backpack; laminated folders with pockets; dictionary; calculator; one-subject notebook; washable markers; colored pencils; and flashcards for all ages. SoW volunteers will be collecting school supplies at the concert as well as financial donations. Checks should be made out to SoW – Ride for Kids.

Musicians performing Aug. 9 include John Boehmer of Salem; Dan Cloutier, Upton; Tom Driscoll, Katie Frassinelli, and Ruthann Baler of Holliston; Andrew Greene, Framingham; Kim Jennings, Worcester; Phil Kissinger, Foxborough; Spencer LaFleme, Boston; Susan Levine, Newburyport; Michael Rivelis, Franklin; Eric Salt, Watertown; Rob Siegel, Newton; Andrea Surova, Belmont; and Tom Tincler, Walpole. Spoken word artist Lawrence Johnson of Sharon will also share his poetry. In 2007, Strike a Chord Concerts for Charity raised more than $5,000 for weekly care packages being sent to local troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
