Seven nationally known clinicians will be visiting Reading on October 4th & 5th for Creative Arts’ annual Suzuki Workshop. The clinicians will be traveling from Connecticut, Maine, Virginia and Massachusetts to work with students of all ages and abilities.
Although this workshop is free to Creative Arts’ Suzuki students, outside Suzuki students are also encouraged to participate. New this year, students studying under other methods, including the traditional approach are welcome to participate in the enrichment classes including fiddle class, fiddle accompanying, improvisation and intro to percussion.
Clinicians include Malgosia Lis, piano; Hanneke Cassel, fiddle; Margaret Hopkins, violin & viola; Linda Gutterman, piano; Kimberly Lorimier, flute; Pamela Marshall, improvisation; and Joshua Jade, percussion.
Malgosia Lis earned her MM in piano pedagogy at Paderewski Academy of Music in Poland. She is a faculty member of the Hartt Community Division and piano coordinator for the Hartt Suzuki Piano Program and Hartt Suzuki Institute. Her Suzuki training has been with Yasuko Joichi, Francoise Pierredon, Doris Harrel and Doris Harrel and Doris Koppelman.
Hanneke Cassel is the former US National Scottish Fiddle Champion and has traveled around the world teaching and performing. Hanneke’s new album Silver was released in May 2006. In this album she creates sounds on the cutting edge of the acoustic tradition, while retaining the integrity and soul of traditional Scottish music. She has a performance degree from the Berklee College of Music.
Margaret Bruziak Hopkins, of Poland, holds a BM in Performance from U. Mass Lowell where she also pursued Music Education. Ms. Hopkins received her Suzuki training at Ithaca College, the Hartt School, NY State University, and Capital University. She has performed across Europe and the US.
Linda Gutterman holds a MM in Piano Literature from the University of Tennessee and has done extensive teacher training in Suzuki pedagogy. A frequent clinician for Suzuki workshops, Ms. Gutterman directed the Greater Washington Suzuki Piano Institute from 1986-2002, and was piano coordinator for the 2006 SAA teacher conference.
Kimberly Lorimier is a graduate of the University of Michigan in flute performance and the Talent Education Institute of Matsumoto, Japan in Suzuki pedagogy. In Matsumoto, she studied under Toshio Takahashi.
Pamela J. Marshall, composer & horn player, enjoys exploring free improvisation as a stimulus for creative work. She has led improvisation classes for many workshops. She studied at the Eastman and Yale Schools of Music and has had commissions from South Beach Chamber Ensemble, The Master Singers of Lexington, Green Mountain Youth Symphony, Trio Arundel, Niel Gladd and Cello e Basso, among others. Current projects include Art-Poem-Music and Poetry-Inspired Music, a series of instrumental solos and ensembles inspired by poems.
Joshua Jade, percussionist, received his BFA in music and K-12 music education from Lewis & Clark College, his MFA in multi-focus percussion from California Institute of the Arts, and continues his teaching and performance development at the New England Conservatory. As a performer he has focused in ‘new music’ but also has extensive experience in other settings. Joshua has just joined the faculty at Creative Arts teaching percussion and is accepting new students.
The workshop offers students and parents an opportunity to work with nationally known clinicians in master classes, group classes and enrichment activities. And it is also an occasion to meet other families who are committed to music education and Suzuki Talent Education.
Each participant will receive one group class, one master class, an enrichment class and a play in with concurrent parent talk. The full workshop cost is $85.00 per student, Creative Arts Suzuki students have paid with their fall registration. Enrollment in the enrichment classes only is $20 per student per class. The registration deadline is September 26, 2008.
Also offered on Sat., October 4th, is Every Child Can!: An Introduction to Suzuki Education with Kimberly Lorimier. This is an introduction to Dr. Suzuki’s philosophy and its applications to Suzuki education. This class is applicable to parents, teachers, perspective parents, perspective teachers and others; this course provides an in-depth look at the Suzuki approach to education, teaching, and listening. This class is not instrument specific. The cost is $95.00 per student.
