On Saturday, May 5th, at 10:00 am, the Dedham Square Circle inaugurates a new series of concerts geared specifically to young children and their families. Music in the Square is presenting award-winning singer-songwriter Maria Sangiolo in an educational, interactive, and energetic performance of original and traditional folksongs.

It takes place at the Dedham Community Theatre, 580 High Street in Dedham, Massachusetts. Tickets are $5.00 for adults and young people 13 and over. Children under 13 are free.

Advance tickets are available at the Blue Bunny bookstore, 577 High Street during normal store hours (781-493-6568) and at the Dedham Community Theatre (781-326-0409). For general information on the concert and series, please call 781-214-9025.

Maria Sangiolo, who grew up in Stoughton and cut her teeth on the Boston area folk coffeehouse scene, now hails from Connecticut and is a popular performer for both adults and children. Maria’s CD “Fairy Moon” won the Parent’s Choice award in 2004. She has performed at many coffee houses around the U.S. and appeared at major national festivals, including Kerrville (Texas), Falcon Ridge (upstate New York), and our local Boston Folk Festival. She has also performed at Cambridge’s Club Passim, which has hosted such folk luminaries as Arlo Guthrie, Nanci Griffith, and Dar Williams.

Music in the Square is designed to expose children from preschool age to the early elementary school grades to a range of music genres. Folk, classical, jazz, blues, and various forms of ethnic music will be represented in this series of three to four concerts per year. The primary goal for the series is to promote music literacy, a greater openness to the range of musical forms found in our culture, and the ability to make music among area families and children. Another important goal of the series is to use the arts as a magnet for drawing people from Dedham and surrounding communities into historic Dedham Square to help revitalize this town center, support its businesses, and make it a 'destination.'
The Dedham Square Circle, the main series sponsor, is a civic organization started by the community, for the community. Its mission is to significantly improve Dedham Square as a strong, vital and unique neighborhood where members of the community can live, work and shop. 5-starMusic In The Square
This was an excellent concert. Our son loved the music (some old favorites and many original songs) and the venue provided the opportunity for him to dance with many other children in the theatre aisle. Maria was a great choice to kick off this series. I highly recommend her show for toddlers to young school age children. And can't wait to see who the series offers next. We'll definitely be there.
