Sanctuary naturalists will lead small groups as they venture out to the 'Big Woods' on Averill's Island. We will stop along the way to hear storeis of the origianal settlers and learn about the fascinating cultural history of the sanctuary. We'll look for animal signs as we hike through the woodlands and marshes, taking in the beauty of the muted colors of late autumn.

We will be out for about two hours, so dress warmly and wear comfortable footwear. Warm up by the woodstove in the barn upon your return. Hot drinks and homemade soups and desserts will be available for purchase beginning at 11:30am, so feel free to come early ti enjoy a bite to eat before you go out on your hike.

From Boston and the south: Take Rt I-95 north to exit 50 and follow Rt 1 north. At the junction of Rt 1 and Rt 97, turn right onto Rt 97 south (toward Beverly and Danvers). Follow Rt 97 south and take the third left onto Perkins Row. Follow Perkins Row for 1 mile, and the sanctuary is on the right.

From the north: Take Rt I-95 south to exit 53A and follow Rt 97 south. At the junction of Rt 1 and Rt 97 in Topsfield, stay on Rt 97 south and take the third left onto Perkins Row. Follow Perkins Row for 1 mile, and the sanctuary is on the right.

Preregistration is required. Spaces are limited. Walks go out every 15 minutes.Open to adults, and to families with children 5 years and older.
