The presentation will be given by Ms. Stacy Kilb, Asian Beetle Outreach Coordinator for the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources. Ms. Kilb works on curriculum development regarding invasive forest pests, and is currently offering ALB workshops throughout the state. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Suffolk University.
Ms. Kilb is speaking at the invitation of the Cub Scouts from Milton’s St. Agatha Pack 5. The presentation is open to the public (especially children and “kids at heart”).
The ALB is believed to have come to the United States in wooden packing crates originating from Asia several years ago. What makes the beetles so harmful is that they bore into the heartwood of a host tree, eventually killing the tree. Maple trees are a favorite of this invasive forest pest. The beetles have no known predators in this country.
Since their discovery in Worcester in 2008, $50 million in federal and state money has been spent to eradicate the beetle, and close to 30,000 infested trees in the Worcester area have been cut down in an effort to halt the spread. Just last year, the ALB was found on several trees in Jamaica Plain.
Ms. Kilb’s presentation will include an interactive lesson covering the Asian Longhorned Beetle: what it looks like, signs of damage and what kids can do to help. Then attendees will practice surveying trees and/or playing some games. The whole program will run about 60-90 minutes.
